A fundamentally different approach
Orthodontic treatment uses brackets or clear aligners to physically move teeth, improving alignment and bite. Veneers don't move teeth at all — instead, the shape and angle of the shell are adjusted to create a visual effect of alignment.
What veneers can address
For very slight overlap or rotation, a veneer design may be considered to create visual improvement. But when the alignment difference is significant or there's a bite issue, shells alone may not achieve a natural result and could require excessive reduction.
| Orthodontics | Veneers | |
|---|---|---|
| How alignment is addressed | Physically moves teeth to new positions | Keeps tooth position, uses shell shape for a visual sense of alignment |
| Suitable degree of misalignment | Moderate to significant overlap, rotation, or bite issues | Only very slight overlap or rotation may be considered |
| Tooth reduction | Generally not required | May increase to create a visual alignment effect |
| Duration | Can take several months or longer | Often completed in a relatively shorter time |

When combining both may be considered
When alignment or bite issues are pronounced, a sequence of orthodontics first to improve position, followed by veneers to refine color and shape, may be considered. This combined approach is commonly described as helping avoid excessive reduction and support a more stable result, but it isn't necessary for everyone.
- 01Exam of alignment and bite
Overlap, rotation, and bite condition are assessed.
- 02Orthodontics first if needed
If alignment issues are significant, orthodontics may improve tooth position first.
- 03Veneer design discussion
Once aligned, a design refining color and shape can be considered.
- 04Final treatment decision
Whether and how much veneer work to proceed with is decided based on tooth condition and goals.
